Sudden change in your vision? Don't wait.
Sudden flashes of light, a shower of new floaters, or a shadow or curtain moving across your vision can be signs of a retinal tear or detachment. Sudden eye pain with headache, nausea or haloes around lights also needs urgent assessment.
Call us on (07) 5616 6008 for an urgent appointment. If we're closed, go to your nearest emergency department.
Cataracts
Common signs: blurry or hazy vision, glare and halos around lights at night, colours looking faded. A gradual clouding of the eye's natural lens, and a very common part of ageing.
Glaucoma
Common signs: usually none early on, which is why regular checks matter. A group of conditions that slowly damage the optic nerve. Caught early, most people keep good functional vision for life.
Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Common signs: a blurry or dark patch in the centre of your vision, straight lines looking wavy. Damage to the macula, the part of the eye you use to read and recognise faces.
Flashes and Floaters (Posterior Vitreous Detachment)
Common signs: new floaters that look like cobwebs or specks, brief flashes of light at the side of your vision. A normal age-related change in the gel inside the eye. New flashes or floaters should always be checked promptly.
Diabetic Eye Disease
Common signs: often none early on. Later, blurry or patchy vision. High blood sugar can damage the blood vessels inside the eye. Anyone with diabetes should have their eyes checked at least once a year.
Retinal Detachment
Common signs: a sudden shower of floaters, flashes, or a shadow spreading across your vision. The retina, the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye, lifts away from where it should sit. This is an eye emergency.
Pterygium
Common signs: a reddish, raised growth on the white of the eye, ongoing redness or a gritty feeling. A non-cancerous growth linked to long-term UV exposure, common on the Gold Coast.
